Really appreciated reading this. I know of Moretti through taking a class with McClintock. Moretti's framing of education here is fantastic. A decent part of my own research is on the relationship between study, self-formation, and the role technology plays in that process. I think you've set your student up well by pointing them in Moretti's direction!

It is early morning, the time each day when I scratch out dreams and thoughts that come to mind before the noise of the day intervenes. I was writing about the books scattered on my table, books about books, about language, Gods, cultures, mirrors upon mirrors.

And I thought of Professor Moretti, walking with him on the streets around Washington Square dozens and dozens of years ago.

I recalled an afternoon as we walked on lower Broadway, when he pointed above eye level to the canopy, ‘’Raise your eyes, look up’’ he said, ‘’there is another city here – don’t miss it’’.

He was the most gifted man I knew, a mentor, guide, a truth-teller of the gentlest and most powerful nature.

Thank you for your post, for the Homily, for reminding us of this wonderful human being.
